Is the energy sector recession-proof?
04 December 2008: Energy markets are typically fast-moving and energy companies and stakeholders are used to rapid responses, but the financial crisis is a potential game-changing event.
Some have argued that the energy sector is recession proof - we at Pöyry do not agree.

New multi-client study on renewables and intermittent generation launched
28 November 2008: Pöyry Energy Consulting has launched a major multi-client study to examine the implications of the expected rapid growth in electricity generation from variable renewable sources. The ultimate aim of the study is to answer the question 'How will the impact of intermittent generation affect the wholesale energy markets in GB and Ireland?'.
This study has already been joined by four major utilities (including three of the 'big six'), two grid companies, and two major wind developers, and will run from December 2008 until March 2009. The study will break new ground, give the first comprehensive analysis of the impact of wind on market players, and deliver commercial and strategic insights.

Why we need to fix our broken electricity market: Pöyry special report
11 November 2008: 'The British electricity market isn't working', a special report by Pöyry Energy Consulting, was published today.
In it, Matt Brown, head of Pöyry Energy Consulting's London office, concludes that "the electricity market needs to be rethought, both to deal with the current failings and to make it fit for purpose in a changing world dealing with the threat of climate change. A complete redesign is in order, but delivering a liquid spot market with a reliable index is the first step."
The full report can be found here.
The Global Market for Biofuels: New product from Pöyry Energy Consulting launched.
23 October 2008: Pöyry Energy Consulting is pleased to announce the launch of its latest product - The Global Market for Biofuels: Performance and Prospects (October 2008 edition).
This report is esserntial for anyone looking to enter into the biofuels market, containing not only globally traded wholesale price projections for ethanol and biodiesel out to 2030, but also projections of refinery investments and capacity utilisations, also out to 2030.
These market projections are then analysed to provide a thorough examination of the economic and resource costs of biofuels, the potential GHG emission savings and the cost of abatement, together with the indirect effects on commodity prices and land-use patterns.

Multi-client study on renewables and intermittent generation
23 September 2008: The levels of wind generation in GB and Ireland which are implied by the EU's proposed renewable targets for 2020 will challenge conventional wisdom. Pöyry's view is that if the renewables targets are to be met, the consequent level of uncertainty over market outcomes is greater than at any time since liberalisation of the electricity industry began.
Pöyry Energy Consulting is proposing a major multi-client study to examine the implications of the expected rapid growth in electricity generation from variable renewable sources. The ultimate aim of the study is to answer the question 'how will the onward march of renewables affect the wholesale energy markets in GB and Ireland?'.

Implications of the UK meeting its 2020 Renewable Energy Target
31 July 2008: Pöyry Energy Consulting has just completed a report for WWF-UK and Greenpeace-UK investigating the implications of the UK meeting its 2020 Renewable Energy Target. The report finds that, if the UK Government is able to achieve its commitments to meet EU renewable energy targets and its own ambitious action plan to reduce demand through energy efficiency, then major new power stations would not be needed to ensure that Britain can meet its electricity requirements up to at least 2020. The report also concludes that a strong drive for energy efficiency and renewable energy can reduce emissions and assist energy security.
Under the projections for renewable build and demand growth as published in our report 'Projections of the Price for Wholesale Electricity in Great Britain' - also published this week - there is a substantial need for major new thermal power plant development over this time frame.
The report considered six scenarios for meeting Britain's commitments to deliver on the binding EU renewable energy commitments for 2020, and for future electricity demand (drawing on both EU and UK targets for energy efficiency), and assessed whether any additional capacity from conventional sources would be needed to secure the UK's electricity needs. It concluded that there would be no role for such plants, even taking into account the very few days when there is little or no wind. These scenarios represent a radical shift away from the 'business as usual' pathway (under which new power stations may indeed be needed). But such a radical shift is precisely what is required by the Government's stated ambitions on renewables and energy efficiency.

New GB Electricity report available
23 July 2008: Pöyry Energy Consulting is pleased to announce the publication of the new edition of its GB electricity market study. This new edition investigates key issues in the market including the impact of recent increases in fuel prices, both coal and oil, and the consequent increase in gas prices. The EU's 2020 targets for renewable energy and the Large Combustion Plant Directive which commenced operation in January 2008 are also considered in depth.
The report contains detailed price projections for a range of scenarios out to 2030. We include results for new capacity - in which we demonstrate there is likely to be a significant requirement for major thermal projects if the UK does not meet its energy efficiency and renewables targets. We examine spark and dark spreads and new entry prices in detail. This is our most thorough report on the GB wholesale market.

High-Level Review of Offshore Electricity Transmission Proposals
07 July 2008: On 13 June 2008, Ofgem and the Department for Business and Regulatory Reform (BERR) published proposals in relation to the regulatory regime for offshore transmission arrangements . Pöyry Energy Consulting was commissioned by a group of offshore wind developers to conduct an independent, high-level review of the proposals relating to the regulatory regime set out in the update document.
The scope for the work excluded consideration of the specific drafting changes proposed for the transmission licence and industry codes, and also excluded the suggestion of alternatives or amendments to the Ofgem/BERR proposals.
The resulting paper sets out the details of our assessment of the proposals, the context in which the proposals have been made and the basis for our assessment, outlining the key features of the proposals and our assessment.
